Words For The Stressed Parent Or Guardian

As parents, we may be reliving the difficult memories of what the school year looked like this past Spring as COVID developed, and the challenges our children had with online learning. We hear many parents and students alike say they are dreading the new school year and the struggles of online learning.

Below are some strategies to combat those fears with success and confidence. Know that this is a resiliency test that will make them not only more technologically adaptable, but also stronger mentally, to handle life’s challenges.

What Should I Do? And Where Do I Start?

Remember to breathe. It is going to be okay. Set up a system and check in weekly with your student. The key is to follow through on a systematic approach; remember every student is different and the system might be similar but unique for that child. Try creating an agenda with your student that will set them up for success.

The agenda for resiliency should cover some basics such as:

  • Review of their school schedule.
  • When can they take breaks?
  • What will they do during those breaks?
  • Identify any challenges they had in the past and list ways they can combat these challenges. Allow your student to come up with the solution, helping them feel empowered.
  • Check in with your student for 10 minutes at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week.
  • Set bedtime hours and when they will wake up.
  • Plan a time to exercise each day.
  • Have a portion of the day for meditation.
  • Schedule a time for play- everyone, even adults need time to be free and creative each day.
  • Identify an appropriate amount of phone usage during the day versus after school hours.
  • Note your expectations as a parent. Such as, when you expect them to hand in assignments.

Bottom line is, to be successful in the moment. And with the challenges that online school presents, in the coming weeks, be on the lookout for more information on how to breathe and meditate. Students need this now more than ever to get centered and focused during these times. Remember as a parent, calm and supportive always wins; students are like sponges, they soak up the energy of their surroundings. Make sure that energy is love, light, and positivity.
